Right ho, the system is:

15" MBP

1.83Ghz Processor

1 gig Ram

80 Gig Hard disk

OS X.4.7

My MBP has developed two faults. On is a mearly niggling problem with the trackpad button. Its become very very stick and unresponsive. I'm pretty sure I haven't dropped anything in it or spilt anything on it. Any suggestions?

The second problem is more sevear and very annoying. The computer is now refusing to sleep. When I close the lid, the screen turns off, but the CD drive makes the 'buzz-buzz' noise it normally makes on boot and when it awakes from about once every 20 seconds.

If I use the sleep command in the Apple menu, then the system goes into sleep for about 15 seconds, then wakes up again.

I have absolutly no idea what's causing it and I'm worried in case it means I have to return my presious computer.

You need to follow the following procedure, moving on to the next number if the current one doesn't fix the problems (the trackpad button sounds like a hardware issue though, since you'll have to get that looked at anyway, you might not want to bother with steps 1 - 6. If you do send the machine back to Apple, make sure you have a copy of your files):

1.) Repair permissions (using Disk Utility, which can be found in the utilities folder of the applications folder).

2.) Verify your hard drive (using Disk Utility).

    3.) Re-set PRAM

    4.) Re-set the PMU

5.) Create a new user (open system preferences, go to "Accounts", click the plus button near the bottom left, and enter something along the lines of "test" for the user name and test for the password). Log out of your own account and log back in as "test". If this solves the sleep issue, come back here and post another message.

6.) Back up your files (you do that anyway, right?), Re-install the OS (archive and install), but not any of your third-party software. If the sleep issue is gone, re-install third party applications one at a time and see if the problem comes back.

7.) Send the computer back to Apple.
