....Microsoft no longer supports WMP for Mac, it now says use flip4Mac to play WMV files. But the flip4Mac isn't yet universal, so I can't use it on my MBP... at least it doesn't allow me to download it.

I try VLC but half the files have issues are unable to be played by VLC. I know the files are okay as my Mates pc plays then fine.

What app can I use to play them?

EDIT: And mPlayer is only playing the audio but no video.

VLC can play video only up to WMV8. The Mac has three options to play WMV9. They are Windows Media Player 9, Flip4Mac, and Popwire WMV-9 Component. The latter is a free download and is Universal Binary in its shipping version.

I am not inclined to dig up the link. But just google flip4mac universal and you will find that a beta was released and then recalled. There are still working links to mirrors hosting that beta and I assure you, it works quite well. Why MS is playing games with this program I do not know. But you can definitely get f4m for Intel Macs. I speak from personal and recent experience. One thing to keep in mind. For f4m to work, you have to delete all signs of Popwire. The two cannot coexist on the same system. At least, that is how it was for me.
