why not bundle .mac with jaguar?

so my idea would be that you get a year free with the purchase of jaguar (similar to how they offered a free license for quicktime 3 -- and 4, technically -- with OS 8.5). or, have a bundle of jaguar and .mac at US$150 (hell, they release a new OS every year or so, so that could cover your internet needs until the next update)

seriously, wouldn't that accomplish a lot of things? such as:

get people buying jaguar (good thing)

get people used to the interaction between jagaur and .mac (good thing)

make the perceived value of both items seem much better (good thing)

repairs some severely bruised PR at apple right now (really good thing)

seems the only downside to me is that less revenue in the short-term, but way more free advertising, faster acceptance in the installed user-base, and mid-to-long-term customer loyalty.

Sounds like a hell of an idea to me.

That's what they did with iTools. Apple bundled iTools membership with every Mac sold. I bought my iBook last November. My bro bought his iMac G4 only in May. And already, our bundled iTools memberships and our "Mac.com email addresses for life" are discontinued. How do you think that makes us (and many other recent Mac purchasers) feel?

Yeah, I totally agree (I even started a thread about it, but it disappeared <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> ). iTools was never free.

Apple made a mistake. And I'm not talking about charging for .mac. They made a mistake with not explicitly charging for iTools from the start. They should have worked it such that, from the very beginning, there was a dollar value associated with having an iTools account; even if they never collected a penny, instead always bundling it with a Mac hardware or OS purchase.

well, i just sent in my suggestion to the .Mac team, with as level-headed and coherent message as I could (especially since i am sure they are weeding through hundreds of messages filled with rancor).

hopefully they'll listen. i would buy the bundle, and i would think it would be worth it.

Except this will be even worse for households who might want to discreet .Mac accounts but only plan on paying for one copy of Jaguar, and might only have one Mac.

My friend has a PC, his girlfriend has a Mac. They live together. He wouldn't mind paying $99 for .Mac but might mind paying $150 for Jaguar, which he won't need because his GF bought the bundle already...

So they still offer the $99 bundle...I guess he's not adverse to paying that much anyway...

well, i was saying to offer the bundle alongside the individual packages, so that one jaguar/.mac bundle and an extra .mac is still less than buying jagaur and two .macs seperately (that's right, right? my math fails me...)
