Zune Player

If Led Zepplin, The Beatles, Radiohead, and Garth Brooks are the only 4 standouts not on iTunes, what are the chances that Microsoft will start their new service with one or all of these bands?

I would think with all the tension between Apple Corp and Apple Computer, this would be a major coup and not to mention huge headlines and marketing ploy.

I am sure that Microsoft can pay Apple Corp just about what ever they wanted to get the music on the new Zune service.

Wow, 4 artists ... M$ is really gonna rule the market with 4 artists!

But what about video ? ... ooh.. I'll bet they'll have the old re-runs of The Brady Bunch.

    Speakin' o which:

MobileMag has posted what is purported to be a Zune teaser vid here.

If the video itself is real (and the production values suggest it is) I can't see what else the tag line "The Future of Entertainment" "Summer '06" would refer to, unless MS is also doing an Xbox portable in the same time frame as Zune, which seems unlikely.

So, assuming this is a Zune teaser, couple of things.

I hate with the fury of a thousand suns the "attractive folks gathering round as the life changing possibilities of the product infuses them with a gradually growing sense of wonder and joy" type advertising. I'm glad Apple generally doesn't do this, and I think it is telling that MS does, a lot. If your product is actually kinda pedestrian you have to go all mystical to try to get some cool on it; Apple's stuff frequently just is cool. This ad is reminiscent of the Origami teaser that was going around.

Secondly, towards the end of the thing we see a guy holding up what everyone is staring at. From the shot in the vid it appears to be about 5" across.

Is it possible MS would make the basic mistake of trying to outdo the iPod by making it bigger? This gets into the old "size vs. functionality" question that keeps coming up whenever we talk about some kind of ultra portable/super pod thing, but if Zune is supposed to be an iPod killer, a 5x7 tabletish thing ain't it.

I think I saw something about MS talking up a "class" of products that all interact wirelessly, maybe a super pod form factor is a piece of that and there is also a Nano sized thing in the offing?

    Good God that is awful!

Jobs was really right when he said that the problem with Microsoft is that they have no taste...in a big sense.

    That advertisement. . .

I've been to cheesy, hipster coffee shops, but I've never seen that many multi-ethnic folks in one spot. Must be a Seattle thing.

I seriously hope that isn't a real ad.

Yeah, I actually thought it was the same thing, just edited a little bit. I also equate it to approximating the success of Zune to that of the Origami.
