It's very easy to use the "anonymity" of the internet to feel justified in treating others like garbage. It's not just message boards but also on XBox live, blogs, etc. I try to approach online communication like we were standing in front of each other and say only those things I'd say to another person's face. Do I always get it right? No, but I am shocked at how rude some here are toward each other.

If somebody gets their feelings hurt on the internet, they either a) posted a picture of their ugly self or b) is ridiculously oversensitive.

Yeah. It might have been humorous with the wrong number of dashes though.

Some folks just don't understand how to process those implicit <humor> tags in winky posts.

    You guys make me laugh.

You don't have to tell me about flaming and trolling. I hear it on a daily basis on the NIN fan club boards. Most of them are good people in there, but there's always that few who deem it necessary to run a contest of "Who can be the biggest, most vile shitbag?"

What's that one phrase I keep hearing? "Arguing over the Internet is like winning the Special Olympics; even if you win, you're still retarded." Yeah, that last statement could be considered in poor taste.. but I was making a point, so in the words of NIN's Trent Reznor, "Flame away, Internet whiners."

One of the problems is that it is hard to communicate on the Internet unless you are a writer. When you are talking to someone with your voice you use different tones of voice and you have lots of different ways to make your emotions known.

On the internet, everything comes out very blunt because it comes out literally.

For example if you say "No shit, Sherlock" in real life their are a hundred different ways you could say it to imply different levels of seriousness or mockery. On the internet, it just comes out one way.

This is the main reason "emoticons" were invented.

Did you misspell Moranis or Morons? It looks like it could go either way!

I meant that there's a family in my town with multiple kids attending my school with the last name "Moran".
