Cool Finder feature #294

Posted:
in macOS edited January 2014
Just discovered a cool feature by accident....

If you choose "Customize Toolbar..." from any Finder window, not only can you add toolbar items from the drop down menu, but you can drag in ANY folder or file as well, and they appear along the top right of all Finder windows.

Yeah, yeah, I know, you can add folders to the left nav window too... but this is still cool.

Don't even have to go into customize, just drag to the toolbar and wait a second and you will just be able to drag it on. If you want too remove remove them just hold the Command key and drag the icon off.

Here's a cool one to try to save this thread.

Everyone knows that Command-Shift-3 takes a screenshot. And Command-Shift-4 turns your cursor into crosshairs to let you choose a rectangular region to take a snapshot of.

But, if after pressing Command-Shift-4, you press the spacebar, the cursor turns into a CAMERA. And then, when you click somewhere it will take a picture of just that window or user interface element like the Dock or a Control Panel. So you DON'T have to try to take the outline yourself.

Finally, if you hold control, the resulting screenshot will end up in the clipboard, not as a file.

Oh, come on. The OP found something exciting for him (her) and wanted just to share the finding. No need to be harsh with people here.

    Thank you for the tip.

Update: Not only will it take a picture of the window, but the window does not have to be completely visible.

Hey - I learned something. namely the sweet screenshot stuff. Besides, it's not like there's a max number of Topics per day that we regularly run against.

How long have you been using OS X? I've been using it for about a year and I pick up cool little tricks on a daily basis. Have you heard about this thing called expose? It rules.

Anywho, here's a list of keyboard shortcuts.

I still enjoy expose. It is a great time saver. I could not locate the thread but when expose first came out people were seeing how many windows they could open with expose and have many of them playing videos. There was a script to get all the windows to start playing at the same time and you could watch multiple videos while in the expose screen.

I am still looking for easter eggs in OS X. Every once in a while I will open a window and just try all sorts of key combinations on different parts of the window. It was neat to see them in the older OS's.

Nice uses for this Finder window toolbar capability:

    1. For example, drag an iPhoto icon onto the Finder window toolbar.

From now on importing pics from CD's/DVD's or other items is a no

brainer. Just drag the pics (or entire folders full of pics) onto the icon

    in the Finder window.

    2. Drag QT and/or VLC onto the the Finder window toolbar.

Now you can quickly check which .mov file opens in QT

and which one doesn't and which one you have to open

    with VCL instead.
