Ok, I found out that pressing alt+F4 will open System Preferences, which is great. But it always opens in the Audio Preferencepane.
Is there any way to change this so it will show all the preferences (so as to avoid an extra mouse click) ?

Alt-F4 doesn't open System Preferences.
Alt-mute, Alt-volume down (which you mistook for F4) and Alt-volume up do, which should make it clear why they open audio preferences.
Likewise, alt-brightness down and alt-brightness up open Displays preferences.
