Hey guys,

I have a 12" iBook and I would like to experiment with some video editing. Essentially what i would like to do is extract sequences from certain DVD's I own and compile them into a music video. Being able to slow down the sequence and add special effects and my own music. Is there anything out there free or cheap that would suit my purpose? Thanks.

iMovie will do the actual editing. It should have come free with your Mac; if not, iLife is not too expensive.

To extract the DVD, you need something like MacTheRipper or HandBrake.

If you had the apple mpeg-2 component (which ought to be free IMO) then you could rip the DVDs as VOB (using yadex or the above tools) and then just split the part you wanted and export to DV or whatever using MPEG streamclip.

Without being able to split the video, you would have to convert every movie entirely to DV. You can do this with ffmpegx but it will take ages and loads of drive space.

Use FFMPEGX to get the video off the DVD and into editable files.
