Why does iTunes keep messing up the album covers?

Whenever I update my iPod I lose all of the album covers of any old songs that were on it before the update. Only the new albums that I just attached art to will show up. Why is that?

Does it have anything to do with me deleting everything from my library and re-importing my music folder each time I update my iPod? I do that because I'm constantly adding new songs and CDs and deleting old ones I don't like anymore, and instead of having to worry about deleting them individually from the library I simply delete everything at once and then re-import my folder.

    It sounds like you have something of an unorthodox method for organizing your music... You might be better served by allowing iTunes to manage your library for you. When you delete something from the iTunes library, it will give you the option to trash it permanently.

    Preferences-->advanced-->General

    You can designate where you want iTunes to store all the music.

    Then check the boxes that say "keep iTunes music folder organized" and "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library".

    Now when you drag songs into the iTunes window, it will make a copy in the folder you designated. You can then trash the original file you dragged. When you want to delete something, highlight it (or multiple) and right-click and select "clear". iTunes will then ask, if you want to move the selected items to the trash or keep them in the music folder. Based on your post, it seems that you will want to select trash so that the files are permanently deleted.

    I don't like doing that because I don't like the way iTunes organizes my music. I put all of my music in my own folder on a portable HD. I put my Full Albums in one folder and any singles or multiple songs by an artist but not full albums all in another. I wouldn't say it's unorthodox, really it's the way 50% of people I know with music do it (the other 50% like the iTunes "folder for every artist" way).

    Back in my WinAmp days that's exactly how I set up my music folder also. It took me a while to get used to the way iTunes handles the music. I was just referring to the fact that you rebuild your library each time you change your inventory of music.

    So it sounds like you have a rapid turnover of your music. The question is how to keep your iTunes database up to date with your current inventory.

    Are you using a Mac or Windows machine?

    I found an applescript that should do what you need to do:

    http://www.faqintosh.com/risorse/en/...s/scanmissing/

    It claims to: "scan iTunes library for tracks whose file is missing, mark them and prompt the user in order to delete their reference."

    This is where my knowledge runs out. I am not entirely sure how to implement this script. In fact, when I view it in the scripteditor, its hard for me to figure out exactly what it is doing. I am trying to construct an automator workflow that will do the same thing.

    Yeah I mainly use Winamp for listening, especially since I hate that iTunes will automatically add a song to the library if I use iTunes to listen to it. I listen to a lot of CDs I end up deleting from my HD, I shouldn't have to search my library for the badly tagged songs and then get rid of them when I can just drag the folder into the recycling bin and be done with it.

    But I'm on a Windows machine. And my biggest problem isn't when I get rid of old songs. iTunes will just let me know it couldn't find that song in the library and I can clear it out. It's the new songs because it will never scan a folder to look for new songs in there.
