hello, i was just wondering what everyone is playing right now, and what games seem to be the most popular on mac. i am more interested in games that have come out in the past year or two. thanks.
Different people like different kinds of games, and there's games in all categories for the Mac. I'm currently playing Warcraft 3 and Unreal Tournament.
Get the registered version. Its for all ages and extremely addictive. And it is Mac only!!
which game do you recommend more: Medal Of Honor Allied Assault OR Return to Castle Wolfenstein? I enjoyed the PS2 MOH (which I beat), and I frequently play Counter-Strike on PC. Which game, if either, do you think I will enjoy more? Should I consider other games instead? Thanks! (I am getting Soldier of Fortune Double Helix, so that is out of this particular question).
Well, if it ever ships to me, Links 2002 Championship Edition. Imagine not being a gamer and this being the only game you want. You hear it's coming out from Bold in October.....and still havent gotten it. The "official release date" changed from month to month to month....January...then Febuary....March...April...May...June..July 26th. Just got an email saying they are shipping it Aug 6th to me.
I've been reading up on Links 2003 now. That might come out September. Sometimes I wish....
Can anyone actually say "Mac OS X gives the player the best gaming experience money can buy." with a straight face? Come on, we don't need to get started on the vastly superior (and cheaper) hardware on the PC side versus the antiquated video cards offered in most Macs, even Apple's own OS 9 gives significantly improved performance.
Anyway, RTCW multiplayer is ace. Looking forward to Links 2002 as well.
"antiquated video cards offered in most Macs, even Apple's own OS 9 gives significantly improved performance."
Well, there are 'antiquated' video cards and onboard video on alot of cheap PCs.
(I'll get shot for saying this...it sounds like I'm defending Apple's out of date Geforce Mx2s...)
The Geforce 2mx is not a 'bad' card. It's old, yes. But it should handle most games thrown at it. Just not at the top resolutions. AND not in 32bit colour.
Regarding games on 'X'. And 'superior' experience. Perhaps it's improved stability and support for Open GL at the core of X.2 that makes him say that. It's been said that os 9's Gl is effectively 'crippled'. Got that quote from Inside Mac games. An interview with Ati guy.
The R300 will do much better on x than 9. X supports the latest technologies and latest shaders for r300 and n30 (support previously missing...) is now in Jaguar.
So make of that what you will.
With the next round of Graphic card updates...you could hardly call the Macs antiquated for gaming. Sure...there's millions of Ati 'Rage' leopars out there. But...they are the victims of Apple's previously closed shop 3D card approach. It hasn't been that way for over a year now. Even the iBook now has a Radeon Mobiliy!
(Darn...my wife's iBook has only got the previous Rage...)
The one area I would agree with you is Apple's use of CPU, bus and memory.
Antiquated. Yes.
It is perhaps these elements that stop Macs truly being on the same level as PCs in Gaming. Antiquated? Not quite true anymore.
But 'level' or 'better' than PCs. I'd agree.
But the pending move to faster cpus/mobo should place the last nail in the coffin to Macs being an inferior gaming machine.
They're pretty good these day from where they've come from! Most games don't 'require' the latest spec anyhow.
That doesn't mean that I don't think Apple's specs can't be improved!!!

"Can anyone actually say "Mac OS X gives the player the best gaming experience money can buy." with a straight face?"
Well, not me. But it's much better than it was several years ago with Ati cards and no Open Gl support! Maybe the guy was talking in pure OS terms...because the hardware aint quite there yet...

WarCraft III, Diablo II, Quake III, JewelToy, Escape Velocity Nova, Baldur's Gate II, Icewind Dale, Geneforge, StarCraft, Age of Empires II, Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete, probably some I forgot.
well, actually I've been building a lot of stuff with my old lego instead of playing games lately...
Yea, Tiger, I've been waiting for Links Champ., too. Glad to see that you were notified about it shipping this month. Let me know if you actually get it.
Also, tghe winner under the 'release-date-keeps-slipping' title has got to be Unreal2. This game hasn't even shipped yet for the PC, so I can't imagine how long it will be for the Mac version. But, if the graphics are as good as promised, it should be worth the wait. Kinda like the wait for Halo!
"Q. What will be the recommended system requirements to play the game?
A. Unreal II will look stunning on high-end systems, but you should be able to play the game just fine on a Pentium III 600mhz CPU with a first-generation GeForce card."
Should work alright on an iBook with Radeon card, then? (Sayy...does the Radeon mobility have geometry acceleration on board? I'm not sure it does...come to think...)
As for best Mac games. The one I played alot was Marathon.
I got the boxed 'Trilogy' set! Nice 3rd party levels and level creator.
A great game with a superb atmosphere. Certainly rivalled and beat Doom in many respects. Nice blasting...but hey...you got to think now and again too !!
Unreal Tournement. I played this until all I saw when I closed my eyes was swirling motion of dark interiors with after images of blue suits bleeding in my head. I kid you not. I had to lay off it!
My best experience (apart from the great solo game/level challenges...) was playing on a network. Hadn't done much 'Lan' partying...but whew...the fun I had. Six hours straight from 12am to 6am in the morning. (Well, that was alot for me...) Fun stuff. Swear alot...got quite okay at it.
Favourite level? Falling off the locomotive level. Bouncing on the tracks...nasty...
Al Pacino...that was...er...my 'handle'...

OOOOPS. This thread sez, best Mac games 'right now'? Er....haven't played any on my wife's iBook lately...

4x4 Evo 2, Escape Velocity: Nova, and JewelToy
Starcraft are Oni are a little older, but are still fun. They too run great in OSX.

By far and away the greatest gaming experience on the Mac is: MacMAME.
I've done a search on this board, and found that nobody here ever talks about it. How is that possible?
Anyway, for those who've never experienced it, go now and check it out!
