Tiger now or Leopard Later?

Hey all,

I have a iMac (G4 1.25ghz, 512 ram, 160gb hd, 17"). I am currently running Panther. I was thinking about upgrading to help my computer last a little while longer but I don't know what to do. Should I wait until Leopard comes out or buy Tiger now? I want this computer to last longer i.e. 1 yr until I can afford another computer.

Is Tiger faster than Panther or are the updates/upgrades not worth it? I was thinking about adding some RAM also so I have 1gb of ram.

I use the computer for internet, photo editing (Photoshop Elements), MS Office work, and some gaming.

Thanks,

Brett

I still don't think Tiger is as significant an improvement over Panther as Panther was over Jaguar. That said, you may really want and appreciate the features in Tiger. If you were to upgrade to Tiger now, it would give you a good amount of time until Leopard has a lot of the kinks worked out of it (somewhere around 10.5.3).

Brett, definitely upgrade the RAM and see if that provides a speed boost. Most people look at 1GB as an absolute minimum.

I say wait for Leopard if you are not in a rush. Leopard will improve features found in Tiger while also including features Tiger does not. Remember, Steve said they had some "top secret" things they did not want to show too soon so we do not even know what they are. If you are one of the people wanting a new/fixed Finder then It might be in Leopard.

A way of having your cake and....

While the legalities could/may/might be questionable you may want to keep your eye on ebay for a discounted copy of Tiger... It seems to sell for anywhere between $30 - $60 from what I've seen.

Edit... Oh I didn't see that you only had 512MB of RAM.... Seeing that's the case.... If you plan on keeping that machine for at least another year or longer I'd jump on the RAM upgrade first and perhaps keep your eyes open for some really good RAM deals and pop the RAM to 1.5GB or 2GB (can't remember what the RAM config options are for the iMac G4). After the RAM then I'd think about Tiger.

It all comes down to how much you want to invest in that computer (for the RAM) and if it's worth the $5 to $10 a month (for the next 6 or so months) that it'll cost you to have Tiger (assuming you'll jump at ordering Leopard at it's release).

Places like www.fatwallet.com and www.slickdeals.com are really great places for finding some REALLY CHEAP prices on computer stuff (and just about anything else).

There's nothing legally questionable about buying Mac OS X second-hand, assuming the seller doesn't keep another copy (which, of course, you cannot actually know).

From what I've read over the years, buying software, movies, etc (from some less than honorable people) could very well be 'less than legal' either for the buyer or the seller. Then again I guess that holds true for most anything you could buy on ebay.
