Hello,

So I really want to get a new mac, I already have a G4 ibook but with boot camp I think a new laptop would be cool (but not required).

So I looked at the prices today (with student discount) and I have to say, very interested in getting the basic macbook with 1gb of ram and running that instread of paying twice as much and getting the 15" MBP.

My questions are:

Would a MacBook run XP/Vista happily?

Are MacBook going to get a Core Duo 2 / update in September? I want to buy while I can still get a cheap nano (to sell on...). Heard about the MBP, just not sure what i've read regarding MB.

Thanks

Ben

My thoughts, having owned both. Well 17" MBP actually.

Macbook: Great I love it, I ended up selling it to my girlfriend because she needed it. I got the Black, which looked amazing! I wish the MBP was in Black matte finish that would be awesome. I like the keyboard on the MB, the processing power as it stands now, I didn't like... I am used to FAST FAST FAST, and that just didn't do it for me I guess, but it still runs great now, the black was a 2.0 dual core, ran windows on it for a short bit, worked great, didn't have a problem. It is also easier to swap memory, and you can actually swap HDD without having to remove the case like the MBP. One other bad feature, only available in Glossy screen (HATED THAT THE MOST!).

MBP: I love this thing, from the nightlight keyboard, to the speakers, and of coarse the matte scrreen. It run's great, I upgraded to 2gb's of ram though, which by the way you should do yourself, the memory from apple is a waste of money in my opinion, when you could spend so much less on third party memory. XP run's great on my friends MBP. It is faster noticably to me anyways, than the MB. Great graphics card for some games, like WOW, and if you have XP you can play HL2 and stuff like that, and you could run full settings since it has the ATI X1xxx series. All around they are both great, it just depends what you want out of it.

And I have no clue if MB is getting duo 2, I don't see why not, but honestly it won't make that much of a difference from what I've read.

Right. I want to know if the next MacBook will have updated graphics. (And I know they'll be integrated...X3000?) Would be nice to know if they'd get Core 2 too. That'd be a nicety. One or the other plus a $100 price cut and I'm SOLD. Hurry up Apple. I have cash that should be going to pay off my loans burning a whole in my pocket. Man I'll be in so much trouble with my fiancee but WHATEVER...I neeeeds it!!! Daddy needs his toys!

MacBook won't get updated for a while They can run XP fine but not sure about Vista since the whole shinied-up aero GUI requires a powerful video card.

MrKlawz would you say the speakers on the MPB are good ? I've heard differing reports, some say they are downright useless..

The MBP speakers are alot better than the MB, IMO. They are not great by any means, I would much rather have external speakers, but they are loud enough for me.. so they work fine for my daily music use.

I definately think Vista would be a problem, but you don't need vista for anything anyways, XP run's whatever you need. Vista will have tons of bugs, and just not run well period let alone a "non-pc" computer.

Wouldn't it be funny if, when Vista sees the light of day, the only computers it runs on with any stability are Macs?

Well if you only need 1gb ram for what you do you might as well get it from apple because their asking price of the 1gb is fair and saves you effort.

People are saying things like "mb shouldn't be upgraded for a while". Which may be true but that shouldn't be the case because core 2 duo is gonna cost the same price as core duo so it makes no sense not to use it, this is what everyother manufacturer has announced so far.

Intel wants to quickly swtich everyone over so their making it worth people's while.

Look at it this way: If you need a computer right now get a mb with your 1gb ram if that's all you need because speed wise all that's different between it and mbp is the gpu if you get the 2.0ghz model.

BUT If you can wait then you might as well wait at least until mid sept because aside from needing something now there is no good reason not to get core 2 duo from apple for the same price you would have paid for just core duo.

Who knows if they change in the next couple of weeks maybe they'll change more than just the cpu anyways and then you'll come out on top.

Asking price for 1gb fair? Hmm in Denmark it's twice as expensive as just buying some Crucial ram and putting it in yourself. Dno if this is the case other places also.

The core duo 2 of macbook is the same cpu as in mac pro and other desktop systems or not?

Is it a 'portable' version of the cpu of the desktops?

Do they have the same power?
