Crucial RAM:

I got 1 for $10 off because it had been opened.

I also bought some RAM heat sinks:

$8 / stick

$333 including shipping. I'll tell report back on how it goes, being as how I'm not using Apple-spec heatsinks.

EDIT: OK Here's a blog post about it:

A lot of people are running out and buying RAM for their mac pros. A word of warning:

Even with brand new RAM, you should ALWAYS run a memory test. I found this one for mac that looks good:

    What Placebo said.

The funny thing is, I almost ordered that exact same combo the other night. I'm interested to see how you attach the Thermaltake heatsinks... I assume it comes with some kind of cheap thermal interface, but let us know if it has retention clips, or if you have to make something else work.

It's thermal adhesive which I think is glue mixed with thermal silver.

Thank you for the update, slughead.

I would be interested in hearing about the results of a memtest--and to be honest, some before and after temperatures. But I know you're not in this to be a tech review site--you just want some reasonably-priced memory for your Mac Pro.

Perhaps some anecdotal evidence, such as cranking up a transcode or two for an hour, then seeing how hot the RAM gets?
