Parallels v. Boot Camp Question

I will be installing XP under Boot Camp so that I can run some newer PC games, but ultimately I will want to be able to do this through a virtual method like Parallels. Do any games currently run through Parallels? Also, I use Photoshop under XP and don't really want to purchase an OSX licence until it becomes Universal. I managed to find a few initial reviews from back in June that had PS running rather slow under Parallels, can anyone comment on it's speed and functionality now? Thanks everyone.

While I don't actually own a Mac just yet, I will be in a similiar situation once I do. That being said, I believe that right now games CAN run on Parallels, but the virtualization is limited to only CPU, meaning any games played, or any program for that matter, will be not be rendered using a GPU.

Unfortunately, this means newer games will not run, and if they do it will be the equivalent speed of a desk chair being pushed by an ant; however the feature to virtualize the GPU will likely be implemented in a later release or version, maybe next year sometime but I'm not sure.

So to answer your question, do games run under Parallel? Yes.

Would you want to waste your time with them at this time? From what I've gathered, No.

Actually, I tried to install some old DOS games that worked on Virtual PC and Parallels wouldn't run them. One of them was Terry Pratchet's Discworld. Graphical stuff just doesn't seem to work at all. I'd say that Parallels is just not good enough for any kind of gaming. I've also heard from someone using Parallels regularly that it is quite unstable and seems to unexpectedly quit quite a lot. It was fine when I used it but I only had it running for about 30 minutes.

Has anyone tried the VMWare product or is it not out yet? I saw it advertised on their website but as usual with these companies, finding what you want is almost impossible.

I use parallels at my company to run Quickbooks. Parallels has never flaked out on me, even when it was still the Beta version. I run it on an iMac with 1.5 gigs of RAM.
