Although they (along with The Register) were the <a href="http://macosrumors.com/?view=archive/9-01"; target="_blank">main reason</a> everyone started dreaming of G5s so early, MOSR has now punted.

Even if the PPC 8500 were actually ready -- which it most clearly is not -- now would not be the time to bring it out.

Huh, would have been nice to know those obvious facts before.

So maybe we can start refocusing on plausible G4 specs...

    Two things...

    1) Where is the proof that it isn't ready?

    2) Why would now not be the time to introduce it? Are you kidding me? All this hype, an economy in turnaround, new years IT budget spending... seems like as good a time as any. Besides, you can wait "forever" for a perfect time to introduce a product, but the fact is, the perfect time is when it is ready. Period.

Im pretty sure the published benchmark-numbers was a fake too. Like I have said before: If Apple introduced the G5 on monday, it would be the biggest surprise in the PPC-history. Remember how Motorola talked about the G4 about 1 year before it was introduced, and the same was true for the G4e.

The introduction of the G4 caught everyone by surprise. It was less expected than the G5 is now.

it was? I had the all the Altivec documents a full year before the G4 was released!!

And Motorola had given detailed presentations of the G4 in 98. We dont know s*** about the G5: We have no information about how many integer units, how many fp units, altivec units, pipeline length, cache design... Motorola gave a full presentation of the G4 about 1 year in advance. And also said one yar later ( october 99), the G4e introduction would roughly follow the same pattern as the G4: A full presentation ~1 year before a finished CPU was released.

Hasn't the G5 been out for a while now as an embedded chip?

The chip (8540?) was introduced, but isn't shipping until later this year.

Maybe Apple forced Motorolla to dish out all the "G4 has still plenty of life in it" just to make a bang with the G5! Or maybe Steve will just try hard to explain just how good a dual G4 @ 933mhz is.
