Monitor Arm for 24" iMac: The ultimate clutter-free desk top!
So finally we will be able to have the iMac with VESA mounting option again!!! Although only on the new 24" Model - remeber the first version of the current iMac had this option for 17" and 20"? At least for the 24" this is GREAT news !!! I think this is ideal for the current iMac design and will work perfectly with a monitor arm: The ultimate clutter-free-desktop is coming back !!!
My question is: which will be the perfect monitor arm for the 24" iMac?
So, how to determine if an arm will support the iMac 24"? From what I have read, it seems that the main restrictions are weight and depth of the iMac (both after detaching the silver foot). The depth is important because it moves the center of gravity forward (away from the arm) and further restricts the weight limit of the arm.
The IMac 24" is 24.7lbs/11.2kg including the foot (depending also on configuration). Does anyone have an idea about the weight of the foot? Does anyone know the depth of the iMac without the foot?
From what I know, the leading manufacturer is Ergotron. They basically have 2 Models: The LX and the Neo-Flex. The LX is advertised as having very smooth movement, so this is what I would like to have. Has anybody used this product? Is it really that smooth? The weight limits for the LX are 20lbs/9.1 kg and this only if the attached "Monitor" is less than 2"/5cm deep. The neo-flex has a weight restriction of 18lbs/8.2kg with the same depth restriction. Will this be enough to support the iMac 24"? Or are there any other/better arms on the market that will do the job?
Interestingly the Apple Store uses a picture of the Neo-Flex on the webpage where they show the new VESA-Mount Adapter Kit. I guess that is no indication that it will work ... maybe just a relic from the good old days when all iMacs had this VESA option...
How about this: The weight of the Apple VESA-Mount-Adapter and how much depth this adapter will add to the footless iMac. Will these things make a difference when choosing a monitor arm?
Would be very happy to hear your opinions and maybe someone has had experiences with similar set ups? Thank You!
