itunes now encoding video in 640x480

in iPod + iTunes + AppleTV edited January 2014
itunes is now encoding everything in 640x480..does this mean that all past content will be re-encoded ? or if not will they have a system to tell you what is encoded in what resolution....anyone get any insights on this ?

    Looks like everything is 640x480 now.
