Memory and virtual memory question with safari

I was looking through my activity monitor tonight and noticed that safari was using 96MB of real memory and 1.6GB of virtual memory which both seemed way too high especially the virtual. I then quit safari and reopened it and it went to 18MB real/200MB virtual. It has done this in the past when I haven't actually closed the aplication, and I wasn't running any other safari windows either time. I was just wondering why safari starts to use up so much memory after is been open for a while. thanks for your time
