It is said that our best ideas come about in the bathroom, be it making a deposit or showering, well this little nugget fell out of my brain while cleansing what's left of the hair on my scalp...

Is there a piece of software out there or the potential for a software that reroutes media streams through one user onto others?

I.E. - I get the Apple keynote, I can serve 4 audio streamers so they connect through me while I get the stream and so on and so forth?

Fraught with copyright issues, I know, but is this essentially what the spyware in Kazaa was?

There's nothing I can think of that grabs QT Player output on the fly or anything. What you can do is relay QuickTime Streaming Servers though, but you'll have to have an mp3 or hinted movie on your drive somewhere. Or you use a DV camera and QT Broadcaster to capture what's on your screen, hah hah hah.

It wouldn't be that hard to implement for sound, but video is harder since you have to encode the new stream on the fly, unlike a QTSS relay which just pushes out the already hinted movie.

Can't the video be relayed pre-decoding?

I thought the best ideas came from the bedroom....

    sounds like "distributed streaming".

Someone came up with a better system a while ago. It's called Multicasting. Basically, think about how cable television is delivered to your home. It is a steady stream of channels flowing down the pipe... kind of like water. When a user tunes into a certain channel, that user is just "tapping into" the stream and pulling out the requested channel.

Well, this is how multicasting works. It was introduced into quicktime with version 3. Every router on the internet will receive the "multicast". This has its advantages because someone on a 56k modem could serve up a stream to everyone in the world.

The problem? Most ISPs don't enjoy the extra traffic, so they block multicasts from entering their network, and as such, all of their users cannot receive it.

So I guess on paper Multicasting is better, but I do recall reading about a distributed streaming project somewhere, don't know where. I'm sure there is some sourceforge project on it. Tried google?

That's what I was describing, but Groverat wasn't asking about that...
