Safari won't connect to the internet but firefox does

I have an old dual g4 @450 mhz, We had a lighting storm and lost power last night. Now safari and sowtware update won't connect to the internet. However Mail, and Firefox still connect. Itunes will not connect either. any help would be greatly apreciated.

    never mind. found that network control pannel had been checked to use a proxy server. Unchecked and safari and itunes are back. I don't know why firefox still worked, but we are good now.
