That's easy. A refurbished iPod has gotten a checkup from Apple after giving someone problems. It's also gotten a price cut, and (I believe) still retains a warentee period, so if you have problems with it you can probably get a new one from Apple. Honestly, refurbs are usually fine; a lot of people just have the need to be the first owner of everything they buy, but many people are satisfied with something just as good that has been pre-owned and is less expensive.
Also, refurbs are a good way to get older Apple products... if you want in on the last gen nanos, iPod photo, iPod with video 60gb, or 1st gen iPod shuffle, then refurbs are a good way to go.
