17" PBG4 @ home (wife)- eMac (kids) - Mac mini (desk, unused). I have Dell laptop that I use at work in construction industry. First, our software (Timberline accounting / project management) is not compatible. Second, out subcription based websites (forums, project leads, etc.) all seem to be built in Microsoft .Net framework, which does not translate well to viewing on a Mac.

So, my question is, when will so x86 software just run on Mac OS without having to emulate or a bunch of other crap?

With Boot Camp, you actually boot into Windows. It's the same as your Dell. There are other options-- Parallels, for instance, allows you to boot Windows in a window while still in OS X. There's also Codeweavers, a company that is creating a commercial version of WINE, allowing some Windows programs (so far) to be run on OS X without ever having to install Windows at all.

If you search the forum, there are tons of discussions already that will help you figure this out...
