Powerbook and Airport

I'm just wondering if anyone else has this problem...

Since I bought my Powerbook G4 15" last summer, the airport signals have always dropped fast, and I've never been able to sustain a strong connection. I thought this was a normal Mac thing (This is my first Apple computer), and I just dealt with it. But I've just moved into a new place, and have a new DLink wireless router, and it is 20 feet directly from my desk, but I can never get a full connection. It fluctuates and sometimes totally stalls. I just had it looked at, but was told the Airport card needs to be replaced and was quoted about $230 CDN. The warranty expired at the beginning of August I think so I don't think I can get it replaced for free. What should I do?

My girlfriend had a 12" Powerbook G4 and it had the same problem. I thought it was interference, but all of our other laptops have no problems in the same room.

So what happened with the Powerbook? Was the airport card replaced?

Nope, she now has a macbook. It is connected to a monitor and wired to the network.
