AVI is wrapper which may contain any of numerous video and audio formats. For your QuickTime installation to play any video, you need the proper codecs. VLC can tell you which codec was used to encode a file even if it cannot play it. To convert video to play on the iPod, you want iSquint.

when i converted the AVI to mpeg4, the movie went from 700mb to 880mbs. The quality of the mpeg is also much worse. Anyone know why im having this problem and what i should do to fix it

I have had good luck with Roxio's Popcorn 2.
