MBP hard disk needs?

hi there,

looking to buy a macbook pro (w/ 100gb hd) in the near future, but was wondering how much space is typically taken up by OSX and pre-installed software like iLife?

I've been told the 'puter will need 15-20gb free disk space to work properly (caching and disk mgmt) and I want to put on a windows partition so I can play a games (probably at least 25gb...5 for winXP+cache & 20gig for a few games), so that pretty much wipes out 45% of the disk straight away.

How much of my remaining disk space (55gb) will be taken up by all the starting software? I'm guessing that it will take at least 10-15, leaving me with 40gig to play with.

40gig seems like a small amount, but i guess thats still more than my current tablet has so maybe not so bad

Is it possible to use an external hard drive to run applications / games, and can you put both windows and mac apps on the same external drive (I'm guessing no??)

Any thoughts, much appreciated!
