Adobe/Macromedia apps on MacOSX

I am used to work with Adobe/Macromedia applications on Windows XP, but I use and own Macs for two years now, so I decided to try out these apps on MacOSX.
What I noticed that all windows float on the desktop. On Windows, there's a "Main application canvas" (grey) on which the floating windows are placed. For me, this is nice since I really don't want to be distracted with stuff on my desktop, when working in Photoshop for example. Secondly, when I miss-click (on the desktop instead of the app), Photoshop hides from me since I "activated" the desktop.
This is very annoying behaviour IMHO. Is there a way, besides APPLE-SHIFT-H (hide all other applications) to make my working environment more 'clean'?
Or, is this just the "fault" of Adobe and Macromedia?
(I noticed Aperture opens a large square window so this problem doesnt occur there)
