EV Nova - Help!

Ok, so a little while ago I finally broke down and got EV Nova, even though I knew it would suck up way too much of my time <img src="graemlins/embarrassed.gif" border="0" alt="[Embarrassed]" />

Now I'm stuck though!

I've currently got a pimped out Manticore (best ship available to me at the moment) with a trade in value of 12.8 million credits and an entourage of a thunderhead, three starbridges, an enterprise and another manticore. I currently have a "frightening" combat rating. However I can't find any "special missions" anywhere! I've done the whole Gli Tech thing (the polaron cannon, waske missle, wraith cannon) and the planet teraforming thing and those mysterious 500000 "info transportation" missions still pop up but I don't have anything new.

Where should I go! Please help! Roaming around disabling pirate ships and taking all there stuff if fun, but it will get old eventually.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you gone through or started one of the main story threads yet? Onve you start one of the major threads, you are locked into that choice. You can't start a different major thread until you create a new pilot file. Why? This is because the path you choose will alter the universe. Say, for example, you go through thread A. In thread A, planet Q is destroyed. Now, In thread B, planet Q is your base of operations. Obviously you can't to thread B after A! All of the threads are like this -- that it would be impossible to do a different thread once one has started.

Also, are you registered? You can't finish a major thread until you've registered.

I'd rather not post information about how to start the threads if you haven't already because it will give some spoilers about the story.

If you *are* okay with a bit of cheating (I think of it as cheating since it practically walks you through every step of the way), then you should have a look at EVula's Survival Guide for Escape Velocity Nova. More specifically, look at the <a href="http://www.evula.com/survival_guide/evn-misn/start.html"; target="_blank">"Where to start?"</a> page that details where to go to begin a major thread.

    Yeah, I'm registered.

I guess I haven't started down a "main story" yet. I had some vell-os dude blab something about my heritage and I should go talk to some guy on New England and I went there but no one was there! And that was a while ago, when I had a starbridge.

I'm sort of scared of the url you posted because I don't want to ruin the game for myself. Maybe the "where to start" page though. I just need an idea of somewhere to get some sort of mission going. I was thinking there should be something at one or the rebel planets, and I kill all the pirates that show up around them, but they give me no love!

They just seem to tolerate my presence.

Sometimes you have to land on a planet several times for the dialog to begin. There is a set percent chance of getting it each time you land; so, it may not happen the first time.

The "Where to start?" page is pretty harmless; though, it does show exactly where to be and what the chances are of getting each thread. It's worth a try.

hint: You can hang around the rebellion forever, but they won't just open their thread to you without meeting completing other missions first.

Also, how long have you been playing with this pilot? Could you have started a major thread some time ago and forgotten about it? Again, the EVula guide will explain each step of each thread if you really are uncertain.

The same thing happened to me. There is a known bug in nova that can mess up the vell-os story line. You need to search through the Ambrosia web site and look for the Vell-os Fix 1.0.1 plug-in.

I found it very annoying that Ambrosia did not include the bug fixes in the standard download (I wasted at least 10 hours of playing time).

The 1.0.0 version did ship with a few bugs, but it was the very first release. Very little software ships nowadays without bugs.

    *cough* microsoft *cough*

    If I recall correctly (<a href="http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/webboard/Forum26/HTML/006042.html"; target="_blank">see here</a>), the 1.0.1 update fixed the Vell-os bugs.

I'm on a poor 56k so I ordered it on CD.

I thought i updated to 1.0.1 before I started playing but maybe it was a while after. The thing with the Vell-os guy not showing up at New England was very early.

Ok, from reading the start page, it seems like I've started the Vell-Os thread and that is why I can't get on any other!

I will just have to start landing on New England constantly and hope I can pick it up again. I've put quite a bit of time into getting a pretty nice ship/escorts, and I'd rather not have it be for nothing

    Unfortunately Nova 1.0.1 has the vell-os bug -- you can get the plug-in that fixes it here <a href="http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/cgi-bin/vftp/show.pl?product=evn&category=essentials&display=da te&page=1" target="_blank">http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/cgi-bin/vftp/show.pl?product=evn&category=essentials&display=da te&page=1</a>

What bothers me is that the fixes have been available for the vall-os and Auroran bugs since 6/5/2002 and they never added it to the regular download, or changed the read-me file to warn you about them. It took me several days of searching through old bbs posts before I found the fix.

Flounder -- you might have to restart with a new pilot once you've added the plugin, but try landing on New England a few times to make sure.

EV-Nova is a great game, and I thought the Vell-os story was a lot of fun -- enjoy!

Hey, it worked! Now I've got some metal crap on my neck!

It should be interesting though, as they told me I'm not supposed to have any non-federation stuff when I've got a manticore with a pirate thunderhead bay and a bunch of pirate ships as escorts because I've just been wandering around accumulating money and stuff for so long!
