Airport automatic connection weirdness
So recently (before, and since I updated to 10.4.8) my Macbook has been weird when connecting to wireless networks. When I turn it on, the airport icon in the menu bar shows it is connected. Then, after about 10 seconds it goes gray - to show it's no longer connected. I then have to manually select my network by clicking on the icon, at which point it tells me, 'there is a problem connecting to network...' and it gives me the option to try again or cancel. I click try again and from then on it all works fine.
I'd like it to connect and stay connected when I turn my Macbook on, without all the fiddling. I've tried deleting the prefered networks and the keychain entries for the wireless networks, but it doesn't work. Any ideas?
NB: This is not the Apple documented problem connecting to WPA2 networks after upgrading to 10.4.8. I mostly connect to WEP encrypted networks.

How long do you give it to re-connect to the network automatically before giving up and doing it manually? With my MacBook it can take quite a while to re-connect after waking (and sometimes it does as you describe - immediately on waking reception is indicated, but then soon disappears).
Test it again and see if leaving it for longer helps. If not, try this:
1.) Deleting the preferred networks and keychain items once again
2.) Reboot
3.) Re-create the preferred network item, and keychain entries.
4.) Repair permissions.
5.) Reboot
6.) Test it but give it longer to re-connect itself.
Other things to try:
-- Creating a new user and seeing if it works in the new user account.
-- Cleaning caches with Onyx or similar.
-- Downloading and installing the 10.4.8 Combo updater.
-- Resetting PRAM
-- Archive & Install OS.
