1.83 MacBook > 2.0ghz MacBook Pro
I repeated this several times in a row, the MacBook wins every time.
both with 10.4.8, fresh OS installs.
2.0ghz MacBook Pro / 2gb Ram / 100gb 5400rpm drive
1.83ghz MacBook / 512mb Ram / 60gb 5400rpm drive
The MacBook Pro takes 7 seconds longer to boot every single time.
The MacBook Pro takes 5 seconds longer to shut down every single time.
All around, the little MacBook launches applications faster, and feels snappier with single applications. It was a dream with 2gb ram.
Anyone have any idea why this is? MacBook Pro has (2x1gb) top of the line Crucial ram, MacBook has stock apple hynix ram. (2x256mb)

Uhm, because when the system boots it checks the RAM.. the more RAM you have the longer that check takes..
I think.
Oh, and the shutdown is for a similar reason, I believe.. the larger the amount of RAM, the larger the saved image of its contents is. I know that one of the downsides of having 2gig RAM in my MBP is that there is a 2gig discimage saved on my harddrive all the time.. for the sleepimage file.
Time the boot from when the screen turns on, not from the chime. That is the time that the POST (Power On Self-Test) is finished.
not using a stopwatch or anything, just one/onethousand, two/onethousand.
MacBook is MUCH faster for bootup. About 1/2 a wheel spin, a mac OS X blink with a partial 'loading' progress bar and desktop appears with menu almost instantly.
MacBook pro does a bunch of spins spins spins, full loading of Mac OS X progress bar. background finally appears, menu shows up later.
Its like night and day.
Potential beast in the machine: MacBook Pro does have Parallels installed, perhaps that is causing some resource allocation, but I do know that when the MacBook had Parallels before the re-install of OS X, it was still just as fast booting. I always remember the 'wow that's fast!' effect it had on me.
After using the Macbook Pro for awhile, I have to say, I like the 'solid' feel of the Macbook better. The battery fits better, doesn't 'move' at all like the Macbook Pro's, and the Macbook just feels more solid and structurally stronger all around.
Additionally, the Macbook kicks the Macbook Pro around for upgradeability, just slide in new Hard Drive and Ram vs. the Pro requiring a disassembly. The Pro does have better and more ports and the better video card + bigger screen. However, the Macbook screen seems brighter. Battery life in the Macbook appears to be almost double the Pro.
On the new Macbook Pro, I hope they:
1. fix the battery so that it fits tighter like the Macbook
2. Allow slide in hard drive upgrades
3. Do whatever they did to the Macbook to make it so much more faster to startup and shutdown
4. Update the latch to magnetic
edit: let me revise this. Macbook Pro wireless sucks like a Dell.
