If I want to get a mac mini to replace my dvd player, cd player, etc. could I get it to share all the files between my laptop, desktop, etc? What else is the mac mini good for except hope entertainment? Does it have dvi (hi-def) output?
You don't 'need' it, but I would suggest using a TV with a VGA, DVI, or HDMI input. You lose a bit of quality if you convert it to a composite signal.
I think a lot more quality is lost than usual, I haven't seen a good composite/S-video output on any consumer computer or consumer add-in card. A $50 DVD player seems to have much better composite/S outputs than consumer video cards at any price. It's well worth using a screen with better inputs.

There are several threads about this.
