I am thinking about getting an LCD monitor. My main screen is a CRT. My cat likes to perch on it, and use it to get onto the rest of the desk. This hasn't been a problem before because it hasn't caused any damage or other trouble, so I didn't think to discourage it. Because LCD screens are considerably narrower and that the outer surfface material of the LCD area is likely plastic (vs CRT's glass), I don't want to risk toppling or scratches to the screen.

What have other people done to solve this problem?

Sit your dog on top of the monitor.

I think your cat will be able to figure out the LCD screen is too narrow to perch on it.

Actually it did straddle and lay along the top edge of an LCD that I had for a little while.

just be warned. Cats can see the screen. in a moment of complete irony, my cat started chasing my mouse on screen. I invested a pretty penny into a Cinema Display but the cat is declawed in front so i am safe.

Before i left for college, my cat would like to on my desk when i was there and every once in a while, i would move a big windows and it would catch his attention. If you really want to have fun, get some cat sound affects.

That's a hoot, I've had that happen. It would be on top, look down and watch things move around. I even have a video of the cat pawing at the "Flurry" screen saver.

The front claws are gone, but the vet was one of those that doesn't do the rears, that was a phenomena that I wasn't aware of when I made the appointment.

I have an idea, I will post it in a couple weeks when I've fully thought it through and researched how to do it.

hehe, reminds me, i was living with this girl last year who had a little kitten. I was in Cinema 4d doing some stuff, with said kitten perched on desk - i noticed he was watching my pointer move around the screen, - well it had to be done - I rapidly zoomed up on my model - kitty lept off desk

If you think it's really going to be an issue, you could get cover the underside of the cinema display base with industrial-strength velcro and fasten it to your desk that way. It would be virtually invisible and raise the display only a few millimeters.

Or, cat tranquilizers. Both have their charm.
