eMac Extended Desktop

I have an eMac 1.25GHz (apple claims its the eMac 2005). I'm looking to hook up a 2nd monitor (LCD vga) to it using obviously the mini-vga to vga port and adapter. But I've heard that you can only do the mirror mode. Is there a way to use the extended desktop mode? I've heard about there being a hack somewhere for the firmware. Any ideas?

Been using it for about a month now. Works great, integrated completely into the OS. I have backup monitor that I can plug in now too, don't even have to logout. Just 'detect' the monitor from the Preferences, and presto just works great.
