Apple Computer on Thursday released a software utility for its first-generation iPod shuffle digital music players that address several issues users have been experiencing with the device. The company also recently issued a minor update to its Final Cut Express video editing software.

iPod shuffle Reset Utility 1.0

iPod shuffle Reset Utility 1.0 (2.1MB or 1.3MB for Windows) restores First Generation iPod shuffles by completely erasing all music and data on the players and then reinstalling software version 1.1.4.

The update is designed to work only with First Generation 512MB and 1GB iPod shuffle. Any other iPod, including Second Generation iPod shuffle is not supported, Apple said.

iPod shuffle owners should apply update if they are experiencing an issue where pressing the Play button causes amber and green LEDs to flash for a few seconds but does not activate music playback or allow synching with iTunes.

iPod shuffle Reset Utility 1.0 will also address an issue where the player will appear in My Computer as a ?Removable Disk? on a Windows PC but will not mount correctly.

Similarly, it will also rectify issues on Macs where the player will only be recognized in Apple System Profiler under Hardware -> USB and will not appear or mount in the Finder.

"When attempting to restore, the unit may not be recognized at all. However, if it is recognized, the restore may fail with an error dialog 'Firmware update failure. Disk write error' or another error," Apple said. "It may take 3 restore attempts before the error appears."

The company also noted that it may take several minutes for the iPod shuffle to be recognized.??More detailed information on the iPod shuffle Reset Utility 1.0 is compiled in this Apple knowledge base article.

Final Cut Express 3.5.1

On Wednesday evening, Apple also issued a minor update for Final Cut Express over its Software Update mechanism.

According to a scant release note, Final Cut Express 3.5.1 "addresses compatibility on specific hardware."

The 14.5MB update has since been posted to Apple's support site.

Boo on apple not disclosing what's in the fce update. If they added 24p hd support I'd buy that instead of fcp, but they don't wanna tell. So I'll just assume they didn't add it.

I just installed the update. Easy Setup doesn't show an option for 24p, so I think you may be right.

They do make it hard to know what changed, "specific hardware" is so vague it's not funny.

My Shuffle broke down on me and I was distraught. It was my very first Apple product and after 18 months and a trip to America it decided to pack in on me. I couldn't believe it but I didn't realise other people had the same problem. I went to the Apple store and they told me it was totaly broken. Just think £99 nearly down the drain! I'ts alive!!!

Shame about my Airport Express though.

IT WORKS... after my scathing report back in spring, Apple has gained a little bit of my respect back. Man, I was going to crack it open and destroy it one day, just never got around to it.(thank god)

I wonder how many people tossed theirs?

I mean, why did it take Apple over a year to fix this problem?????????

    Anyways, It works.

yeah... it works... until you reenable disk use on a PC-- then it no longer mounts in Itunes and says its corrupt when you restart itunes. Quality. i guess this shuffle will be linked to my macbook since apple has issues making decent software and updates for PC.

My iPod Shuffle started having this issue about a month ago. I was planning to go out and buy myself a new MP3 player, so needless to say I was quite happy when I downloaded this and it worked!!!
