I will be receiving my new MBP core2Duo today and I am wondering if I can use all of the apps from my G5 iMac and just firewire them over to the MBP, or do I need to install everything separately? I know how to find out if the apps are universal but I don't know if they HAVE to be universal in order to use them on the MBP. Any help would be appreciated.

No, they don't have to be Universal to use them thanks to Rosetta. Depending on how much ram you got and the program, it might run a little slower if it's not a Universal app, but it will still run.

Thanks so much. I think I need to bone up on Rosetta. I got 2 gig ram. Do you think there is any reason not to just firewire the programs over?

Some programs won't like it as they install components elsewhere. Photoshop for example probably won't like just being copied over. For those apps, a reinstallation is better. Otherwise most apps are fine. Whatever you do, don't replace stuff on the MBP with stuff from the G5. Things like the utilities folder.

When I switched to Intel, what I did was boot the old machine in firewire target mode and I made a disk image of the whole system. This took up about 18GB. Then I could access it whenever I wanted to get stuff to save me plugging the firewire back in. It's not the same problem having a laptop and a desktop - I had two desktops - but it can make life easier.

Use the Migration Assistance and it should put everything where it needs to go. I found this to be the best way to transfer everything.

Thanks a million. My MBP came today and I got the files I needed transferred. I used the migration assistant as suggested and had no problem. Thanks.
