So I tried connecting my 3rd gen ipod via usb

The iPod would not charge or connect to my computer.

The USB cable I used came with a video iPod I got (so it would still connect to the dock connector on my 3gen).

I misplaced my Firewire cable for the 3gen which is why I attempted to use the USB cable. Does the USB cable not provide enough power for the 3gen? Is there some solution I am missing here that doesn't involve spending money?

    I think you need a power adapter to charge with USB to plug into an outlet-- if I remember, 3G ipods were still firewire based, before USB2 took off.
