difference in 480i and 1080p

Whats the difference in 480i and 1080p stuff like that? Also what is the difference in 1080i and 1080p. Thanks.

The simple answer:
the number equals the number of lines of resolution. the "i" indicates interlaced (meaning that there are two fields to each frame. the "p" indicates progressive scan, (the entire frame appears at once).
