Adjusting digital out
I don't remember if I have used the digital audio out on my Macs before. Is it supposed to be normal that there is no system-wide volume control of the digital output? In the sound output preferences, I see "The selected device has no output controls" and the volume control in the menu bar is greyed out.

Yes that's normal. Digital out needs to go to a device with a D to A converter before it can be heard. Any volume control would be on that device.
That device isn't conveniently placed, with little chance of that changing, so I guess I'm going to have to go back to analog, the digital out is going to be useless without an in-system volume control.

There is some in-system volume control for the digital output: mute.
Some might find the degree of precision thus provided a bit lacking.
