illustrator CS 1, turtle speed

I got a Quad over the summer and Illustrator CS (1) works very slow on it. This is a full version btw that can bundled with creative suite. Currently running OS X 10.4.8 but the sow speed was the same on the default version of 10.4 installed on the quad. btw, it works faster on my Dual 2GHz G5 with OS X 10.3.9

The Main Problem

It can take over 30 seconds for the "new document" popup window to appear and over a minute when openening even the simplest of AI files. The launching of Illustartor also takes much longer than it used to.

I don't understand why this would happen. My old dual 500Mhz G4 was faster than this. All my other Apps work fast, a few speed issues with photoshop but for the most part it's pretty good. 3D and video apps work excellent.

If anyone has any info, knows the cause, or knows a fix, please let me know. It's getting to the point where I feel the vein busting in my temple.

Thanks

Try deleting your system caches using a program called cocktail. Messed up caches can make programs launch slowly and also slow down switching between programs. Messed up font caches can cause problems too. Can you read in the startup panel where it seems to be having the biggest problem? Is it sticking on a particular font name for example or optimizing font menu.

The startup speed is not the slowest, creating new documents and opening files is.

I did switch my scratch disks which helped the speed somewhat but there is still lag.

    Thanks

Ok and is opening/creating the file itself slow or is there just a pause before it opens one of the dialogs?

One thing you could try is deleting the illustrator preferences but if it's always done this, it's unlikely that they are corrupted. I remember that my Finder once took ages listing files by kind and it annoyed me for a while and I got round it by turning off the kind listing but by accident, I fixed it by deleting the Finder preferences.

Are you using the Adobe file browser to open files or the one in the file menu and do they both lag?

Is Illustrator being used with Suitcase?

Does it behave differently if Suitcase is not running?

One trick that has worked for me is trashing every AdobeFnt••.lst file you can find, where •• is a number. Adobe has them hiding everywhere, and if they get out of sync with each other, problems come up from missing fonts in menus to slowdowns.

By the way, does Illustrator run better under another account?

If yes, then you know it is something like this in your local /Library folder.
