Bearlake in Macs?

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
I noticed an article today on Bearlake allegedly having HDMI support. Is Bearlake something we are likely to see in Macs and particular in Minis? I'm not too up on processor/motherboard architecture, but an HDMI port in a mac mini would be rather handy for those of us with only an HDMI on their LCDs.

Bearlake would rock in a mini and iMac.

I agree, but if Apple keeps using mobile CPUs/parts on the Mac mini/iMac, we'll never get it.

However, I think Bearlake would also be nice in a new desktop Mac, you know, the one that's being discussed in another thread...

As far as I know, Bearlake supports Conroe/Kentsfield and the upcoming Wolfdale/Yorkfield, up to quad-cores, 1333FSB, DDR3 RAM, PCIe 2.0...

Is a DVI adapter such a big problem?

They're pretty hard to get where I live, and nobody want the hassle of waiting for Apple to post an adapter out. The more companies go down the HDMI route, the fewer cable types, less port types, less consumer confusion. HDMI 1.3 all the way.

Actually forget everything I just said. What do you guys want a HDMI port in a Mini for anyway? Besides the fact that the iTV/Teleport will just smash the Mini out from under tv's around the world, why would Apple put a port on it's other devices that stoped them from making more sales on the iTV. Wont happen, iTV is being built for under the TV, the Mini was never built for that purpose.

But computers are going towards UDI or DisplayPort, so an adapter's gonna be needed anyway, unless you want minis to suddenly have 27 different ports.

Those adapters don't add audio, though. Would be nice to have some kind of combined cable from DVI-D and optical-minijack to HDMI.

From threads I have read, HDMI doesn't always send the correct resolution to the mac when using an adaptor, so having an HDMI option in a mac would be handy. Obviously there are audio benefits too.

HDMI is really nothing but a pin-for-pin representation of DVI-D video plus digital audio; type A is like single-link DVI and typ B is like dual-link DVI.

So I can't think of any reason an adapter would cause problems; it is, in essence, just a different plug (plus added audio functionality).

AFAIK there is no such thing as DVI-B

    There is

    DVI-I

    DVI-D

    DVI-A

I take you didn't read the second part of my comment, or, you didn't take it into a account.

That's beacause he spoke of HDMI-A and HDMI-B. I'm not sure about those designations but I'm pretty sure that there are at least two different versions of HDMI, one with single link DVI and one with dual-link.

As Henriok pointed out, I never claimed there was.

HDMI is only relevant to DVI-D (and, naturally, DVI-I, which is just DVI-A + DVI-D combined). For both single-link and dual-link DVI, there are corresponding HDMI variants.

What if iTV were mergedd with the mini and all the ports came with the new package?

Yah, it would be handy but its not like Glasgow is like the Outer Hebrides. Even there mail order should work. If someone makes a combined HDMI-DVI/optical adaptor you can get one in Glasgow. Just trying to help the bloke out with some sources.

In any case HDMI out would be great on the Mini and IN/OUT on the iMacs especially the 24". iTV helps with the OUT part but not so much the IN. 24" is smallish for a TV but not THAT small.

Buying an iMac to use as a TV display isn't a good idea unless you are looking to spend money. At least where I am, one can get a 42" flat panel for the price of a 24" iMac.
