For you armchair tourists, check out the The Teotihuacan Pyramid of the Sun, in Mexico. Think about this, how is it that so many different civilizations of the past put so much significance on pyramids?? Aliens? Stargate? Anyways its pretty damm cool:

It's just KISS. Until the early 20th century nobody knew how to build a REALLY tall building that didn't fall over, unless it sloped the sides to less than 52 degrees. The 60 degree pyramid the Egyptians tried got unstable partway up, so they finished it at ~42 degrees slope. Sorry to bust the conspiracy, but it's just a limitation of building with unmortared blocks.

I would have to agree with Hiro, although It's a pretty cool structure nonetheless. Some historians seem to think that Carthaginians may have made it to the Americas in the 200BC timeframe, but I'm not sure that any cultural exposure would have survived over a thousand years, however.
