You might want to make some back up first.

He said he had backed things up on CD-R...

Anyway, it sounds like you're trying to just drag everything to the trash. That won't work. You have to take your Mac OS install CD, put it in, then restart while holding down "C." It'll start up from the CD (make sure you keep holding down C for a while until you're sure it's starting up from the CD). Then you can reformat your drive.

before installing 10.2 I formatted my HD.

What I saw is that there is no more option (like in classic Disk Setup) to zero all data and those kinds of options.

Does anyone know why? Why I format my HD and reinstalled MacOS 8/9 I always zeroed all data etc etc... took a long time but I found that performance was much better after doing so.

I have the impression that zeroing all data has no advantage whatsoever to the Mac OS X file system. It is enough to format the mapping and boot sectors on your drive to have it virtually wiped. It is of no importance whether there is a one or a zero in a certain part of a certain sector, if the mapping for that sector says it's a zero.

I think if you notice a performance issue, that has to be caused by something else (fragmenting, bad install, ...).

Unless you have illegal stuff like child porn (god forbid) and the FBI is after you, there's no need for zeroing.

Horrible example, I know, but true.
