A salesperson at my local Apple Store suggests that I use Roxio Toast instead of the included Apple burner to backup my hard drive on a DVD before doing a clean install of Jaguar.

He said even if I don't buy it there I should definitely get it, is this true?

Disc Burner's perfectly adequate for everyday data burning. Toast gives you flexibility and options (VCD, copying Audio CDs), so you only really "need" it if you're going to be doing the sort of work that plays to its strengths.

    Have a look at <a href="http://www.roxio.com/en/products/toast/index.jhtml"; target="_blank">Roxio's site</a> for more info.

Toast gives you a lot more options on what you can do other than what OSX has included in it. I would recommend Toast but only get it if you need it.

Actually, I think Apple's own Backup application rocks. Check it out today with your trial .Mac account. I just today did a completely-automated, five-disc backup. It was great.
