No optical audio out

My G5 dual core 2.0 plays audio through the headphone jack fine, but will not output to optical even when I change the settings in the prefs panel. What gives?



It used to be an intermittant problem but it has become permanent.



It started after I used Audacity.

    This is weird... if I sleep the machine, wake it, and open Garageband, audio starts to work fine. Somewhere during the day it stops, and then I do the process above.



    Itunes is the first app to "lose" the optical out, then Safari.



    This is weird.



    Any ideas?
