A new iTunes movie-download service from Apple Computer (Nasdaq: AAPL - News) along with the release of six new games for the Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT - News) Xbox 360 caused a significant volume surge on North American broadband networks in recent weeks, according to traffic measurements made by a Canadian network equipment supplier. The surge is a clear reflection of the growing popularity of these services.

In September, Apple's release of iTunes 7, which supports the downloading of full movies onto iPods, caused a nearly 140% peak increase in traffic, the company said in a news release last week.
