Hi,

I have a 15" Core Duo MBP (no Firewire 800) and I was wondering what my best options are for fast, external storage. Is is possible to use a PCI-E to eSATA card to use with an eSATA external hard drive? I'd like to use this setup for editing video... any recommendations?

Thanks,

Mike

You can easily do this using the expresscard/34 slot. There are two port eSATA cards available. You can then purchase an external enclosure that has room for two SATA 3.5" drives that you can either put them in RAID 1 via software or you may be able to find an enclosure that is setup for hardware RAID.

There is a good selection of options here: http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Sea...%20KITS&sort=a

and here is the card i was talking about:

thanks, ill check it out. i was also wondering--this hadn't even ocurred to me before--but what about a firewire 800 card in the express slot? would i be better off with this or eSATA? I hadn't even really thought about a RAID... I'm really just a hobbyist, though I definitely need more space (and speed wouldn't hurt either).

    thanks,

For storage alone, eSATA is a better option than FW 800.

the only problem I've run into on the eSata expresscard 34 and external hard drives is that there does not seem to be a way to run disk repairs (how to unmount) or disk permissions? Anyone have a suggestion?
