Does any one know how long it takes to rebuild your directory? I am using disk warrior to rebuild my directory with the hope that my HD isn't shot. What is the usual timeframe for a rebuild to take place?

Thanks

It depends on what may b wrong with it to some degree, as well as your computer's speed, but I seem to remember most of the time, it was an hour or so for me on a tibook 1ghz.

The error was a "keys out of order error" which sounds pretty major. Its a 12 inch powerbook 1gb. If disk warrior has been running for a couple hours, should I probably be concerned? There is a message on the disk warrior screen that says "speed inhibited by disk malfunction" am I doomed?

Yeah, your hard drive is going south, mechanically speaking. DW can't fix that malfunction.

BACKUP everything you can, and look into getting a new hard drive - maybe try www.powerbookresq.com

That's not exactly what I wanted to hear, but none the less thanks for your help. Any advice on back up? I tried data resuce II, while using target mode, no dice, it couldn't find the HD. Is there any hope?

Well you could pay a specialist a ton of money to go in and recover all of your data for you. By a Ton of money I mean I know it's expensive, but I'm not sure how expensive. It depends on how valuable your data is, if most of it was disposable and it doesn't really matter (old documents you were probably going to delete anyways, stuff like that) then I wouldn't bother. If you have stuff like Family Photographs on there though, be prepared to pull out your Wallet and head to the nearest specialist.

If you can get the hard drive out, some people have luck freezing it for a while (in bags to prevent condensation). The cold causes contraction then expansion as it heats that sometimes unsticks things. A longshot, though...

I had the same problem a while back. Dick Warrior and Tech Tools Pro could not fix it. I was still able to start up in Target mode and recover things. I then tried reformatting and had a bad sector. Look on the bright side, you can now get a bigger, faster HD for your machine.
