How do I make an image file?

Hi, I want to back up a DVD (its my dvd yearbook, nothing illegal!) to my external harddrive. How do I make an 'img' file, so that when I click on the file, it loads as if a dvd is in the computer/shows up on the left sidebar in finder. I hope that makes sense lol. Cause I have an img file like that already, its a video file, and when I click on it one of those drives shows up on my desktop, the same picutre as a USB drive looks like when you plug it in. (The white one) and when i open it its a Video_TS and Audio_TS file. Again, I hope I'm making sense, but I don't know all the vocabulary so I kinda am just explaining it. Thanks!

    /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility



    Menu item: File -> New -> Blank Disk Image
