Selecting text in Microsoft Word problem

Do any Word users have a remedy to Microsoft Word selecting the word before your selection begins? Every time I go to select text by dragging with the mouse, it always highlights the character or word before my selection begins and I have to drag to the left and then to the right to stop it doing so which is a pain. Is there an off switch to this feature?
