Top Tip: getting rid off all those Illustrator CS2 fonts

Nothing will cripple your machine like having too many fonts open. Even the most powerful machine will be brought to its knees by this often overlooked problem.

I can't recommend enough, the practice of steering clear of Suitcase, and using the Font Book app to open and close unneeded fonts. You'll be surprised at how much breathing space this gives your Mac. I've seen people with EVERY font they've ever encountered in their careers open at the same time, and they wonder why it takes a G5 Quad five minutes to open an app.

But what about those pesky fonts in the Illustrator CS2 menu that always ahow up even although they aren't visible in Font Book? Quit Illustrator CS2 and try the following:

1. create a new folder on your desktop

2. go to Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/

3. select everything EXCEPT the Reqd folder, and drag them to the folder you created on your desktop

4. open Font Book

5. go to the 'File' menu and select 'New Library', call the new library Adobe CS2

6. drag and drop the contents of the folder you created on the desktop into the new Adobe CS2 library in Font Book

You can now open and close all the Adobe CS2 fonts like any other font ? thereby ensuring that you don't have to scroll up and down the drop-down font menu in Illustrator CS2 all day!
