iTunes is tripping when starting a song

Running iTunes 7 on my windows pc. When a new song starts, the music is all garbled for about 10-15 sec. as if it's tripping over itself. Hint: The task manager shows a near 100% CPU surge when a new songs starts. It's awful!! Any ideas?

    Perhaps try and use Force Quit and turn off some of the other 50 programs you have running simultaneously?
